ORGANIC ADVOCACY

At SOS, we believe in the power of organic agriculture to create a healthier planet and a more sustainable food system. Our advocacy efforts focus on strengthening organic standards and promoting policies that support organic farmers and businesses.

Why Organic Advocacy Matters:

  • Protecting Consumer Trust: Organic certification provides consumers with assurance that the products they purchase meet rigorous standards. By advocating for strong organic regulations, we help maintain consumer confidence in the organic label.
  • Supporting Organic Farmers and Handlers: Organic farming and handling practices can be more challenging and complex than conventional methods. Our advocacy work aims to create a level playing field for organic farmers and handlers, ensuring they have the resources and support they need to succeed.
  • Promoting Environmental Sustainability: Organic agriculture prioritizes soil health, biodiversity, and reduced pesticide use. By advocating for organic practices, we contribute to a more sustainable and resilient food system.

How We Advocate:

  • Engaging with Policymakers: We work with elected officials and regulatory agencies to promote policies, technologies, and tools that support organic agriculture.
  • Participating in NOP and NOSB Public Comment Periods: We provide input on proposed National Organic Program (NOP) regulations and National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) recommendations to ensure that the organic community’s voice is heard. Learn more about our NOSB work
  • Collaborating with Other Organizations: We partner with other organizations to amplify our impact and build a strong coalition for organic advocacy. This includes working with experts and research institutions to gather data and evidence on the effectiveness of risk-based residue testing and developing standardized protocols for risk-based residue testing in organic.
  • Educating the Public: We raise awareness about the benefits of organic agriculture and the importance of strong organic standards, third-party certification, and government enforcement and oversight.
